Failure of the Maintenance Gantry of a Metro Crossing Bridge
(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd., 2020) Vatansever, Cüneyt; YAZICI, GÖKHAN; SEÇKİN, EDİP; Alçiçek, Haluk Emre
This paper investigates the failure of the underdeck maintenance gantry of the metro crossing bridge in Istanbul, Turkey on January 4, 2014, which resulted in the injury of four workers. First, a brief description of the gantry and the bridge has been provided, which is followed by the findings of the on-site investigation which involved the review of the video record of the incident, interviews with the field staff, overview of the project drawings and the investigation of the parts of the collapsed gantry. Additionally, the finite element model of the part where the collapse initiated was created and loaded in accordance with the operation procedures of the gantry during the incident. Finally, on-site investigation and finite element analysis results revealed that collapse of the gantry occurred by exceeding the shear capacity of the bolts in the connections. Moreover, the exceedance of the shear capacity was the consequence of unexpected operating practices used by the workers during the incident, which caused unforeseen shear stress concentration in the bolts.

Snow induced collapse of hail protection canopies
(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, The Boulevard, Langford Lane, Kidlington, Oxford Ox5 1Gb, England, 2017-09) Vatansever, Cüneyt; SEÇKİN, EDİP; YAZICI, GÖKHAN; 151093; 119077; 140840
This paper addresses the snow induced collapse of hail protection canopies of a major car dealership in Istanbul, Turkey. Each of them with different plan dimensions has been built to provide an enclosed space of over 50,000 square meters for parking. The structural system of each hail protection canopy consists of successive steel frames spaced at 5.0 m intervals. Some of these canopies collapsed on January 1st, 2016. The rest has been saved thanks to the immediate intervention provided by the employees allowing accumulated snow to slide off the roof. Following the incident, a site investigation has been conducted to inspect the structural failures and a numerical 3D model to represent the whole structure was developed using OpenSEES to understand the collapse mechanism of the hail protection canopies. In addition, the scope of the structural design calculations was examined to check for potential incorrect design assumptions. Consequently, site observations and analysis results indicate that the hail protection canopies collapsed due to a combination of erroneous design assumptions on snow load and the poor design and construction of structural members and their connections.

A Learning by Doing Approach in Teaching the Fundamentals of the Structural Desing of Trusses
    (2014) SEÇKİN, EDİP; YAZICI, GÖKHAN; 140840; 119077
This paper reports the findings of a study, conducted with second year students of civil engineering enrolled in the course of Engineering Mechanics at the Civil Engineering Department of Istanbul Kultur University, to improve the understanding of fundamental concepts related to the structural design of trusses. Students were asked to build truss systems from Balsa wood loaded with small weights, analize the truss member forces and indicate whether the members are under tension or compression. At the final stage of the workshop, a group discussion was held on the factors effecting the design of trusses with references to the structural models prepared by the students. In addition to supplementing the theoretical concepts related to the analysis and design of truss systems, preparation of the physical models and experimentation with the educational analysis software have also increased the motivation of the students towards the course of Engineering Mechanics.
