Publication Embargo A Learning by Doing Approach in the Delivery of Structural Engineering Courses of Architecture(2013-04) Erkan Yazıcı, Yasemin; YAZICI, GÖKHAN; 140840; 112309A through understanding of the principles of structural system design is particularly important for architects practising in Turkey where over 90 percent of the population reside in seismically active regions and the structures built must withstand the damaging effects of severe earthquakes. However there are problems incorporating the classroom based structural engineering courses into architectural design curriculums which are largely centered on the architectural design studio. The students of architecture are accustomed to the “learning by doing” approach used in the design studio and have a hard time adjusting to the classroom delivery of structural engineering lectures which largely use mathematical abstraction to communicate concepts of physics. This paper presents the findings of a study conducted at the Faculty of Architecture of Istanbul Kultur University to investigate the use of a “learning by doing” approach at the Building Mechanics course to increase the motivation and the academic performance of students.Publication Open Access A Learning by Doing Approach in Teaching the Fundamentals of the Structural Desing of Trusses(2014) SEÇKİN, EDİP; YAZICI, GÖKHAN; 140840; 119077This paper reports the findings of a study, conducted with second year students of civil engineering enrolled in the course of Engineering Mechanics at the Civil Engineering Department of Istanbul Kultur University, to improve the understanding of fundamental concepts related to the structural design of trusses. Students were asked to build truss systems from Balsa wood loaded with small weights, analize the truss member forces and indicate whether the members are under tension or compression. At the final stage of the workshop, a group discussion was held on the factors effecting the design of trusses with references to the structural models prepared by the students. In addition to supplementing the theoretical concepts related to the analysis and design of truss systems, preparation of the physical models and experimentation with the educational analysis software have also increased the motivation of the students towards the course of Engineering Mechanics.
