    Collaboration of Architects and Engineers in Structural System Configuration Through The IDECAD Platform A Case Study

    This paper reports the findings of a multidisciplinary design workshop with the aim of improving the collaboration between architects and civil engineers in choosing an appropriate structural system configuration for a design project. The workshop was conducted with the participation of undergraduate students of architecture and civil engineering at the Istanbul Kultur University who were asked to work together in selecting an appropriate structural system configuration of a simple reinforced concrete residential dwelling. The participants were asked to experiment with various design options and to evaluate the implications of their design decisions on the overall cost and constructability of the design project. IdeCAD Structural for structural design and IdeCAD Architectural for architectural design, were selected as the software for design collaboration due to the ease of exchanging information, the ability of checking designs according to Turkish design codes and the similarities in the user interfaces.

    Failure of the Maintenance Gantry of a Metro Crossing Bridge

    This paper investigates the failure of the underdeck maintenance gantry of the metro crossing bridge in Istanbul, Turkey on January 4, 2014, which resulted in the injury of four workers. First, a brief description of the gantry and the bridge has been provided, which is followed by the findings of the on-site investigation which involved the review of the video record of the incident, interviews with the field staff, overview of the project drawings and the investigation of the parts of the collapsed gantry. Additionally, the finite element model of the part where the collapse initiated was created and loaded in accordance with the operation procedures of the gantry during the incident. Finally, on-site investigation and finite element analysis results revealed that collapse of the gantry occurred by exceeding the shear capacity of the bolts in the connections. Moreover, the exceedance of the shear capacity was the consequence of unexpected operating practices used by the workers during the incident, which caused unforeseen shear stress concentration in the bolts.

    Working with Mathematical Tools for Generating Complex Surfaces

    This paper presents the findings of a workshop conducted with the undergraduate students of architecture at the Istanbul Kultur University within the “Form and Geometry”course. The main aim of the workshop was to inform the students on the ways of working with mathematical tools for generating complex surfaces. Matlab was chosen as the mathematical tool for this workshop due to its ease of plotting curved surfaces. After a brief introduction to the user interface and plotting features of Matlab, students were given the task of generating a hyperbolic paraboloid surface. Afterwards, the students were asked to experiment with their model and observe the effect of the change in the parameters on the model geometry. Finally, the students were shown how to export the generated surface to a DXF file and asked to import the surface model to Autocad. The workshop was concluded with a group discussion on the views of participating students on using mathematical tools together with CAD tools to generate complex surfaces and the difficulties they have experienced throughout the exercise.

    Gömülü Betonarme Boruların Analitik ve Sayısal Yöntemler ile Tasarımı

    Gömülü betonarme borular, kentsel altyapının kritik bileşenleridir. Tasarımlarında, boru özellikleri, boruyu çevreleyen dolgu zemin, yataklama koşulları ve etki eden dış yükler dikkate alınarak ampirik veya sayısal yöntemler kullanılır. Bu çalışmada, uygulamada yaygın olarak kabul gören ampirik ve sayısal analiz yöntemleri dikkate alınarak yapılan tasarım hesaplarındaki farklılıklar geri dolgu malzeme türü, dolgu yüksekliği ve boru çapı değişimi dikkate alınarak parametrik analizler ile incelenmiştir. Çalışma sonuçları, sayısal analizlerde zemin-boru etkileşiminin gerçekçi olarak dikkate alınması nedeniyle hesaplanan gerekli donatı alanlarının geleneksel tasarım yöntemlerinden elde edilen değerlere göre daha düşük olduğunu göstermektedir.

    Experimental and numerical study of the sloshing modes of liquid storage tanks with the virtual mass method

    Accurate prediction of the vibration characteristics of the sloshing motion is essential for the analysis and design of liquid storage tanks subjected to base motion. The virtual mass method is a computationally efficient approach to determine the hydrodynamic forces generated by incompressible and inviscid fluids in accelerated containers since the virtual mass method involves meshing of the fluid boundaries rather than the entire fluid domain. Hydrodynamic actions of the sloshing liquid are taken into consideration by coupling a virtual fluid mass matrix to the structural points on the wetted regions of the tank wall. Analysis of the free surface displacements of the contained liquid can be carried out using the virtual mass method and this paper focuses on the application of the virtual mass method for the analysis of the vibration frequencies and mode shapes of the sloshing modes in rectangular and cylindrical liquid storage tanks. Firstly, the theoretical background for the analytical solution of the mode shapes and modal frequencies is presented for rectangular and cylindrical liquid tanks. This is followed by the description of the procedure used to apply the virtual mass method to obtain the sloshing modes and mode shapes of the contained liquid. The effects of various surface mesh topologies on the predicted vibration characteristics are compared with the analytical solutions as well as the results of an experimental study conducted on scaled rectangular and cylindrical containers mounted on a shake table.

    An Evaluation of the Academic Performance of Students Enrolled in the Double Major Programmes of Architecture and Civil Engineering

    Double major programs allow students to simultaneously obtain diplomas in two related academic programs by satisfying their graduation requirements. Students of architecture and civil engineering at the Istanbul Kultur University can apply for the double major program between the third and fifth semesters of their undergraduate education providing their GPAs are at least 3.00 out of 4.00 and they need to maintain their GPAs above 3.00 to continue the double major program. Although all double major programs are demanding and require keen interest of the students, the double major program is particularly challenging due to the differences in educational models used in engineering and architecture. Engineering education largely depends on classroom teaching and laboratory work whereas the architectural education is centered on the design studios. This paper attempts to evaluate the academic performance of civil engineering and architecture students enrolled in the double major program at the Istanbul Kultur University and outline the challenges of a double major program of engineering and architecture.

    Dynamic behavior and optimization of offshore gravity platforms

    This paper presents the results of a dynamic investigation with the aim of determining both the optimal shape of an offshore gravity platform column and the required mass of the infill water The natural frequency formulation of the structure with the added infill water mass, E-r, was obtained by using Rayleigh's method. Pontyagin's maximum variational principle was used to define the shape of the column. An algorithm and a computer program were developed to obtain the numerical solution of, the problem. Finally, a scaled model of the gravity platform was built and tested, in order to verify the results obtained from the analytical research and to determine the mass of the. infill water.

    Calculation of Pile Capacity in Cohesionless Soil by CPT Considering Spatial Variability

    The study aims to construct a framework for CPT based ultimate pile capacity calculation for cohesionless soils with random field theory. Cone tip resistance (qc) was taken as the spatially varying parameter with a constant mean and changing coefficients of variation. CPT profiles were simulated with random field generations, and the ultimate capacity of a single pile (Qu) was calculated with these simulations. The influence of spatial variation of qc on the variation of Qu was investigated. The proposed framework was finally verified by comparing the results of an actual CPT database and the simulated CPT profiles in the study. The results showed that the critical vertical scale of fluctuation for CPT-based pile capacity calculations was equal to one diameter of pile (dv=1D), and that the method effectively predicted the ultimate pile capacity through simulated CPT profiles with random field. The proposed method is especially recommended for cases where the uncertainty consideration is necessary, yet the site-specific data is limited. The study aims to contribute a simple framework to the methods of CPTbased pile capacity with unceratinty consideration. The propesed method aims to facilitate the pile design framework with limited available data.

    A Learning by Doing Approach in the Delivery of Structural Engineering Courses of Architecture

    A through understanding of the principles of structural system design is particularly important for architects practising in Turkey where over 90 percent of the population reside in seismically active regions and the structures built must withstand the damaging effects of severe earthquakes. However there are problems incorporating the classroom based structural engineering courses into architectural design curriculums which are largely centered on the architectural design studio. The students of architecture are accustomed to the “learning by doing” approach used in the design studio and have a hard time adjusting to the classroom delivery of structural engineering lectures which largely use mathematical abstraction to communicate concepts of physics. This paper presents the findings of a study conducted at the Faculty of Architecture of Istanbul Kultur University to investigate the use of a “learning by doing” approach at the Building Mechanics course to increase the motivation and the academic performance of students.

    Case Study: Izmit Domestic and Industrial Water Supply Build-Operate-Transfer Project

    The "build, operate, and transfer model" (BOT) is a financing model, which is used in many developing countries to finance new infrastructure projects with private sector participation. The BOT method foresees the financing, designing, building, operating, and managing of the facility by the private sector and then its transfer free of charge, to the owner after a predetermined concession period. For interested parties, the history of BOT laws and projects in Turkey is presented as an Appendix. In this study, the Izmit Domestic and Industrial Water Supply Project, the biggest privately financed water Supply project procured under the BOT model in the world at the time and the first in Turkey will be introduced and the problems that arose during the implementation of the project, namely, the scope of the project, equity debt ratio, return on equity, principles of accounting, coordination of State departments, land access, determination of the optimum operation period, and the sale price of the water, will be presented and suggestions will be given on how to deal with these problems.
